During the most challenging time of my life, I didn’t know how I was going to get through it. It made me realize how short life is. After making some significant changes, I made an effort to find happiness and utilize my time in meaningful ways.
I faced a point in my life where I didn’t know how I was going to get through it. I had been diagnosed with cancer. I started treatment and was on the road to recovery. However, six months into the process, I unexpectedly lost my daughter, Trisha, in a car accident. It was an incredibly hard time trying to handle such a significant loss in my life. I didn’t know what I was going to do or how I was going to carry on.
For a long time, it was just Trisha and me. She is my first child from my first marriage. I worked in Information Technology from 1983 to 2007. With a steady income, I was able to buy a house at age 21 for my family. Through Trisha’s friendship with a young boy in her second-grade class, Ryan, I met his mother, Stephanie. Not long after meeting Stephanie, we fell in love and decided to get married. Gradually, we expanded our family with three more children, Emily, Sophia and Owen.
In 2007, when I was going through cancer treatments and dealing with the loss of Trisha, I realized how precious our time is. In many ways, it was a wake-up call. Life is so short – I didn’t want to waste any moment of it. I had reached a point where I was no longer afraid to take risks. After taking a year off from work, I decided not to return. It wasn’t my passion, and I knew there were other opportunities out there for me. Fortunately, I got my REALTORS® license back in 2006 and decided to pursue that full-time.
As I established my new career, I was able to spend more time with my family. I felt like I was finally using all of my time doing things I truly loved and was passionate about. In 2010, I decided to go on a trip to Nicaragua with a family friend who owns a nonprofit helping a small village there. It was a life-changing trip. Working with the church in the village, we were able to provide financial support and help feed families. We helped fix houses and make improvements throughout the town. We also provided soccer balls and shoes to many of the local children. I started regularly visiting through the years and brought my own kids along on several trips.
After a few visits, I learned more and more about some of the children’s stories. I had a special connection with three families in particular. I started sending them and their children money every month. I wanted them to feel financially supported and able to afford basic necessities. Today, the youngest child I support is in her first year of college and has learned English. We keep in touch through messenger, and I am always overjoyed to hear how well she is doing. It is so rewarding that my success in real estate is utilized to help people across the world. I learned so much through my trips to Nicaragua. It has made me very thankful for all that I have.
Today, I am so happy with the changes I have made in my life. All of my time is used to pursue the things I care about most. There were many years working in Information Technology where I knew it wasn’t my gift, but I needed the financial stability it provided. Now, I am fortunate to have a career that I love, helping people every day. I am proud to have encouraged my children to do the same and pursue their passions.
